How to Make Fake Alginate Fingers

Materials needed

To start making our fake fingers, it is necessary to gather a series of materials, such as alginate suitable for the human body, EASYPLAT silicone flesh color, silicone adhesive, plastic cups for our mixtures, a brush to decorate our finger and red and black pigment to give a more realistic look to our creation. 

What is alginate 

Alginate is a material suitable for making single-use molds of human body parts, without damaging them.

We recommend these two versions:

• A fast one, for professionals and fast molds of faces, which is the Alga-Cast Fast. It has a curing of between 3 and 4 minutes depending on the temperature of the water.
•   The other version is the Alga-Cast Slow. Designed for beginners, courses, children's classes ... It has a wider curing time frame, about 9 to 12 minutes. To make our false fingers, we are going to use this type of material.

As for the latter, Feroca mold alginate is a perfect molding material for making temporary molds of the face, hands and other parts of the human body. This material captures detail at levels not reached before by any other alginate, so your fingers will look very realistic. 

Alga-Cast Slow is easy to use and will allow you to have, in a few moments, a perfect mold. It works to cast once or twice nothing else, depending on the material to cast.

What is Easyplat Silicone

The EASYPLAT (in any of its versions) is a two-component platinum catalyst (addition) silicone. The product can be translucent (EASYPLAT 00-30) or flesh colored, which is what we are going to use for our new Halloween creation, and becomes an extremely soft and soft elastomer after curing. 

The EASYPLAT is mainly used for the realization of FX molds, animatronic, prosthetic applications, Reborn dolls, hyperrealistic replicas, silicone masks, etc. 

The EASYPLAT will produce molds and parts that can be used for a very long time, always maintaining the softness of the silicone. They are also characterized by excellent electrical performance, in addition to chemical stability, water resistance, anti-corrosion, non-toxic, aging resistance, easy pouring, easy to use and complete vulcanization. It can meet the requirements of mechanical strength even with very low hardness.

There are materials that should not be mixed with this substance, such as water, impurities, organic catalyst of tin, acids, alkaline and other organisms containing sulfur, phosphorus and nitrogen.  All of them influence the vulcanization of silicone rubber, which can cause its inhibition and malfunction.

What is silicone adhesive

DC 734 silicone is a transparent monocomponent that functions as an adhesive. It can be used to repair your broken molds or to fix silicone parts, such as masks or prosthetics. Being more fluid than the DC 732, the 734 is ideal for painting silicone as we are going to show you throughout this article. Diluted with naphtha or hexane and adding pigment, you can paint any type of silicone already cured, both tin and platinum.

Step by Step to Create Fake Fingers for Halloween

Mold

• First, mix one part alginate with three parts water.
• Once it is mixed, put your finger in and let it rest for 10 to 15 minutes.
• When we notice that it is well cured, that it is like jelly, we take it out very carefully.

Casting

• Pour equally in a glass the mixture of EASYPLAT FLESH, stir and pour into the alginate mold, in the hole that we have left the shape of our finger.

With silicone EASYPLAT FLESH we will have a working time of 30 minutes. This has a flesh color. 

• To give it a more realistic touch, we can split half of a chicken bone and put it inside the mixture.
• Once the curing time is over (five and six hours), you can remove the silicone finger from the mold.

Last details to make it hyper-realistic

• For the blood of the finger, we will have the silicone adhesive and we will color it with a red and black pasted pigment. If you want or it is very thick, you can dilute with a little naphtha.
• With a brush, apply this dough around your finger very carefully and, after drying all our creation, it will be ready.
