Alginate: perfect for making a body mold

When working with alginate it is important to know that there is alginate of fast setting and another of slower. The slow setting will offer us more work time, so it is perfect for those who have not yet worked with this material. Those who have already made their first steps with alginate, you can try the fast setting.

At Feroca, we offer you an optimal range of alginate for skin contact. Ideal for creating body molds without any inconvenience during the process or when unmolding it. However, one issue that is important to keep in mind is that the hair area must be protected.

The hair must be covered with a bald cap to be able to apply alginate on it and create our body mold, while in the hair of the rest of the body it will be enough to apply a little petroleum jelly.

So that the bald cap is completely sealed, in Feroca we sell special glues for the skin. With this glue you can glue the edges of the bald cap  to the skin so that everything is smooth and there are no irregularities.

If you are going to work with alginate on a person, you must also protect the area of the earrings with plasticine, so that no product enters and everything is well sealed.

How to make an alginate body mold

1. Preparation of the material: to prepare the alginate you have to add one part of alginate for every two of water. However, the proportions may vary depending on the consistency you are looking for, and at Feroca we encourage you to experiment and test.

For alginate body molds it is interesting that there is a dense consistency, so it is preferable to apply a little more product than water; to be able to work with it correctly.

2. Start first at the back: whenever we talk about creating a mold and use a person for it, it is advisable to start at the back, since it is usually the one that will demand less product compared to the front. Once you have the right consistency, start applying the alginate to create your body alginate mold.

3. Countermold: The best way to make an alginate-based body mold is by making a countermold. For this you will only need plaster bandages and hot water. You will only have to submerge the bandages in the water and put them in the areas where there is alginate.

A trick that we give you from Feroca is the use of hot water; so the bandages set before and you can have everything ready in less time.

4. Repeat the process from the front: With the mold and countermold of the back already done, it is time to create the alginate body mold from the front. You will only have to reprepare the mixture (this time in greater quantity) and apply it in front to get a perfect alginate body mold.

For the face area, if you want the alginate mold to have greater expressiveness, you can ask your model to smile or put a specific type of gesture .

In Feroca we advise you that if you are applying alginate with someone, you talk to them so that they feel safe, since sometimes it is a process that can overwhelm. So, agree on some movements so that in case the person is overwhelmed or cannot breathe well, you can remove the alginate immediately.

It is also very important to protect the area of the nose so that the product does not enter the nasal passages and hinder the breathing of the person on whom we are making the alginate body mold.

Once you have applied the alginate in the front, it is time to make the countermold.

5. Final result: finally comes the moment you were waiting for, to be able to unmold the mold and see the final result. If you're working on a person, ask them to gesticulate to open the mold faster.

With the alginate mold already unmolded, you can make the copy with Monster Clay a type of plasticine that we offer you in Feroca and that is optimal for its casting. Apply it with a brush on the mold and you're good to go!
