Silicone is a material that has various uses. One of them is the elaboration of reproductions of figures through molds of this same material.
You can make creations such as jewelry, soaps, candles, anime figures and all kinds of crafts you can imagine. In addition, they are very resistant and have a non-stick capacity.
In this article you will find a guide and a video tutorial that shows you step by step the silicone mold process in two parts.
Before starting to tell the step by step of this process, it is necessary to know all the materials that we will use to create the most original molds. The materials we need are:
Silicone Feroca Silastic 3481. It is perfect for use in this type of molds. The composition and properties of this silicone support castings with different materials such as polyurethane resin, polyester resin, different types of acrylic resins, plasters, plasters, waxes and epoxy. Epofer putty. Application of more or less conical shape that will facilitate cast the resin once the mold is made.
Building blocks. To conform the walls of the container with silicone.
Brush. To apply the release agent.
Tools and tools for modeling.
The first step is to take two portions of Epofer putty and mix them to form what the piece is going to be. This putty is very easy to manipulate to make any creation.
Then, the release agent is used in the area where the putty will be placed to prevent it from adhering too much to the plasticine bed, which is the next step.
To build this, we are shaping it with the tool. On it, we are going to press the piece that we are going to copy, we sink it to about half. This will determine the modeling line during the next process.
Now we seal well all the accumulation of plasticine that is missing around the piece to avoid leakage of the silicone. Little by little, the entire contour is sealed and the exact half of the piece is determined.
This plasticine can be used with tin silicones, but not platinum, as it contains sulfides and can inhibit it.
Around the piece, we will make a series of marks, not very deep, using a tool with the right shape. In this case, we will use the end of a pen that provides us with a more or less hexagonal shape. In the same way, we point out a perimeter channel around the margins of the plasticine bed.
All these holes and the channel itself will serve so that both silicone faces fit and seal perfectly at the time of casting of the resin.
To build a two-part mold, we need children's building blocks that have different shapes and sizes.
With these pieces, we assemble the walls of what will be the silicone container and that will determine the outer shape of the mold.
Then, we apply the Ferosil V32 release agent on the plasticine. Given the release properties of Silastic 3481 silicone, it is not necessary to apply it directly to the part.
Next, we will proceed to make the silicone mixture. For this step it is necessary to follow the steps that we offer you in Feroca both on our website and in the packaging of each of our products.
The measurements and proportions have to be well adjusted. In this case, we need 800 grams of silicone and the corresponding amount of the catalyst is 40 grams.
Mix the catalyst with the silicone and move insistently with a suitable tool until you have perfectly mixed both components. Once mixed, the working time of the silicone is 45 minutes. Pour the silicone into the mold container.
The way in which it must be poured is by dropping it to a certain height in order to break the bubbles and, from one of the corners, slowly try to cover the piece slowly. With patience, we complete the filling of the container without creating bubbles. When we have the piece completely covered, we must wait 24 hours until it is set.
When 24 hours pass, the building block structure is dismantled. We remove the plasticine until the first face of the mold is visible. When removing the plasticine, we can appreciate how the holes and the channel that we made previously stand out, this creates a protrusion that will help us to fit perfectly the two sides of the mold.
On the same formwork used previously, we apply the Ferosil V32 release agent in order to seal the joints between pieces and thus avoid silicone leaks. In addition, it will serve to slide the first layer of silicone of our mold to the base of the formwork.
Then, apply the release agent throughout the silicone surface, since if we left any area without this material, the silicone that we are going to pour next would indivisibly catalyze the previous face.
For the mixture, we use the same measurements as we used previously: 800 grams of silicone and 40 grams of catalyst. We perform the same process in the mixing and pour it on the piece trying to break the air bubbles. Once this second pour is completed, it will be necessary to wait another 24 hours for its complete curing.
After that time, we disassemble the walls of the container to finally be able to release the silicone mold. Thanks to the release agent we can easily separate both sides of the mold. Finally, with these two molds we have our copy of the piece we want to make.
