Polyester Gelcoat, as discussed above, is a material that offers a high-quality finish on the visible surface of a composite polymeric material. It is used as a first layer of registration and then filled with polyester. It is made from isophthalic unsaturated polyester resin. It also provides a perfect finish on mold in fiber laminates.
It is the first layer of resin that is applied to the prepared mold, it constitutes the finish of one of the surfaces of the laminate, providing protection against chemicals, weathering, humidity or any aggression of the environment. In general, they have greater resistance to abrasion, corrosion, the action of UV radiation and temperature changes than their corresponding base resins.
The manufactured component, once cured and removed from the mold, presents on the surface the gelcoat layer. This is usually pigmented to provide a glossy colored surface, which enhances the aesthetic appearance and gives new life to your compositions.
Polyester Gelcoat is applied as the first layer, once the mold has been waxed. It allows you to obtain pieces with a perfect finish, with all the detail of the mold and with good resistance to weathering and contact with water. It can be used in the following situations:
In the automotive industry. More large pieces are finished in gelcoat both interior and exterior. For example, bus or car bumpers.
Construction. Certain elements are painted with gelcoat which gives more protection and a good finish (water tanks, septic tanks, transparent sheets ...).
Decoration and window dressing. Figures for interior decoration, exhibitors...
Theme parks and architectural elements. Necessary to give showiness to the attractions and achieve greater resistance to the water parks.
In repairs. It is a highly appreciated product when it comes to repairing pieces of polyester reinforced with fiberglass that contain scrapes, scratches or that are worn.
The gelcoat and topcoat are formulated through a polyester resin, vinylester resin or a modified resin to which different products are subsequently added in the form of additives, dispersants, levelers, deaerators, ultraviolet filters and pigments that are what give them the final properties.
There is virtually no difference between those two products. A topcoat is simply a gelcoat to which a percentage of a paraffin solution has been added, most often paraffin styrene (10% paraffin solution).
The application of gelcoats is common for all natures and qualities. In the manufacture of parts with higher added value or technical requirements, the application parameters must be much more careful. The influence of these parameters is directly related to the final quality of the gelcoat layer.

The gelcoat can be applied with a gun, roller or brush. For best results, the application with a gun is recommended, since it allows the lamination of layers of greater uniformity and thickness. In enclosed environments or places of difficult access, painter's rollers can be used as an alternative.
Gelcoat applied with a brush can present stretch marks and little uniformity in thickness, which harms the quality of the finish. The very thick layers are brittle and may have superficial crackers. Very thin layers are susceptible to wrinkle, due to the attack of styrene from the rolling resin. Therefore, you have to be very careful when applying the gelcoat with this object. If the gelcoat is applied by spraying, it can be done in one hand.
The gelcoat must be applied to our piece on a mold, either rigid or flexible. From the mold, the copy is taken out. For the first layer of records, as mentioned above, we are going to use gelcoat. You can add pigments of the color you want to the mixture so that it is similar to that of your piece. In this case, you can use the pigments that we offer you in Feroca.
Then, we simply have to spread it with a brush over the entire surface of the mold. We must emphasize all the nooks and crannies so that we do not have any bubble left.
Once dry we can make the polyester casting , following the step by step that comes on the product label.
For the filling we will mix the polyester resin with marble in equal parts. In this way we will get it to have more hardness. We are going to mix it well so that there are no lumps or bubbles and then catalyze it with the Feroca catalyst for polyester resins.
Once everything is well mixed, we make the casting and let it heal. When it is cured, we unmold it and we have already made our piece reinforced with polyester gelcoat.
